Symptoms of damage
Upper part of the plant wither and droop

We can observe shedding of buds and flowers

Bores holes in fruits

Deformed fruits can be seen.

Identification

Egg

Egg are sky blue in colour and are small.
Larva

Are brownish with white streaks dorsally and pale yellow ventrally
Adult
Earias vitella

Forewings are pale with a wedge shaped green band in the middle
Earias insulana

Forewings are uniformly silvery green
MANAGEMENT
Use azadirachtin @ 5ml in 10l of water

Use emamectin benzozte 5% SG @ 3g/10l of water

Use Quinolphos @ 8ml/10l of water.

Use Phasalone @ 1.5ml/l of water.

JASSIDS

Causal organism : Amarasca devastans
Identification
Egg

Are Yellowish white in colour and are broad on the surface

Nymph 

Light green, translucent, wingless found between the veins of leaves on the under surface
Adult

Green, wedge shaped leafhopper
Symptoms of damage
Tender leaves become yellow

The margin of the leaves start curling downwards and causes reddening

In the case of severe infestation leaves get a bronze which is typical “hopper burn” symptom

The margins of the leaf get broken and crumble into pieces when crushed
The leaves dried up and shed and growth of the crop is retarded.

Management
Spray insecticides like
Thiomethoxam

Dimethoate 30 EC 500 ml/ha

Bifenthrin and Lambda cyalothrin

APHIDS

Causal organism : Aphis gossypii

Symptoms of damage
Affects tender shoots and under surface of the leaves.

It leads to curling and crinkling of leaves

Stunted growth can be seen

Development of black sooty mould due to the excretion of honey dew

Identification of pest
Eggs

Are yellow in colour and are oval in shape
Nymphs

Are Yellowish or greenish brown in colour and are found on the undersurface of leaves.
Adults

Are greenish brown in colour, soft bodied and small insects

MANAGEMENT
Use Imidachloprid @ 100ml/acre

Use Thiomethoxam at 100g/acre

Use bioproduct like Bio R 303 @ 1-1.5ml/lit

By setting up yellow sticky traps also we can control these aphids.

WHITEFLY

Causal organism : Bamesia tabaci

Symptoms of damage
Chlorotic spots(Brown colour) can be seen on the leaves which later spreads and forms irregular yellowing of leaf tissue

Severe infestation results in premature defoliation

Development of sooty mould is the another important symptom

It is a vector of yellow vein mosaic virus
